how the killing mask got its ears back.
many people may not know why the killing mask is missing its ears today, famously after filming the final scene with the killing mask, gunner Hansen was so tired of those ears flopping against him whenever he had it on that he ripped them off and threw them into the forest. Ever since then the killing mask has remained earless.
after visiting mr David Munoz to take various pictures and accurate measurements of the killing mask, he told me of the little idea that he had, what if the killing mask never lost its ears? What if they still existed and aged the same as the rest of the mask? he told me that he would love to commission me to do such in the future, but as a gift for his generosity, I decided to surprise him and do them for free.
I already had the measurements for the sides of the mask, so I knew what size the ears should be. how high up they are supposed to be was a little bit of an issue, though, since I didn’t get measurements from the bottom of the base that’s under the Styrofoam head upwards so I just had to eyeball it, And put it on an adjustable stand. I match the color through various layers of different tones, and sealed it with clearcoat enamel, same as the actual killing mask with a layer of resin on top as well to keep them firm.
I wanted to make sure that they would match up exactly to the little details on the side of the mask as close as possible, so I had to do a little forensic work. On the right side of the mask, the stitches are still on the mask, which tells me that that year should have noticeable stitching rips, which I added, which coincidentally match up perfectly as you can see in the photos. The left ear, needed to still have the stitching on it since they came off of the mask on that side. I also added a little section of latex to that ear that would’ve ripped off from the face on that side.
